It must have been about 40 years ago when we first visited St Drostan’s well at Aberdour beach.\u00a0Some friends of our lived in Rosehearty at that time.\u00a0 They were having problems with their baby who was always being sick.\u00a0 The locals told them they should be using water from St Drostan’s well.\u00a0 It would be better for the baby than the water that came from the taps.\u00a0 So off we all went to Aberdour beach\u00a0so that they could \u00a0fill up their big bottle\u00a0with the saint’s water.<\/p>\n

We made a trip yesterday back to Aberlour beach in the campervan.\u00a0 Poppy explored the well before she enjoyed a scamper along the beach with Lily, not to mention exploring the exciting sea cave.
\nThe inscription on the well is difficult to read now:\u00a0 “St Drostan’s Well 1884 Erected by J Findlater LLD, a native of Aberdour”<\/em> and it certainly needs a tidy up.\u00a0 Mary suggested that they need to create a “Friends of St Drostan’s Well” group to look after it.
\nIt is said that St Drostan used the water of this spring to baptise local people and was famed for his miracle cures. St Drostan lived in the early 7th Century.\u00a0 He\u00a0was a follower of St Columba and was the founder of the Abbey of Deer.\u00a0 In later life he withdrew and lived as a hermit in Glenesk in Angus (not far from where I was born).\u00a0 He died at Glenesk and his remains were taken to Aberdour where they were placed in a stone coffin and long believed to work wondrous cures.\u00a0 I wonder if our friend’s baby was one of them?<\/p>\n
